UPG sports roundup

The UPG men’s and women’s basketball teams each split two games this week. Both teams lost at Lake Erie in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play. The Lady Bobcats fell 83-77 while the men lost 77-54. However, on Wednesday, Dec. 5 both teams came away with victories at Mount Aloysius—the Bobcats 72-67 and the Lady Bobcats 85-65.

Men’s basketball

In the Bobcats’ victory over AMCC opponent Mt. Aloysius, freshman Jacquet Wells continued to shine scoring 25 points and pulling down six rebounds. Senior Ed Montgomery added 14 points and point guard Torrey Sochacki grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. UPG shot almost 42 percent from the field but just 46 percent from the free throw line.

Against Lake Erie, the Bobcats had a terrible shooting game. They shot just 34 percent from the field, 22 percent from behind the arc and 50 percent from the free throw line. Ed Montgomery scored a team-high 14 points and junior Daniel Waajid added 10 points and collected a team-high 17 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox scored a team-high 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the win over Mt. Aloysius. Senior Tiffany Menhorn added 20 points, five assists and seven rebounds and sophomore Amanda Sheaffer scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Lady Bobcats dominated the game on the glass out-rebounding Mt. Aloysius 49-32.

UPG also shot well from the free throw line (71 percent), shooting 12-12 from the line in the first half. Five players shot 100 percent from the stripe, including Menhorn (5-5) and Sheaffer (5-5).
