SGA to offer scholarships

Pitt-Greensburg’s Student Government Association is offering three new $500 scholarships.
The scholarships are awarded to a student who is studying abroad, a student who demonstrate leadership abilities and a non-traditional student — a student who is 23 or older. Each applicant will be judged by a committee that will pick the winners.
“The committees consist of the two Senators from the SGA, the dean of Student Services, Rick Fogle, the director of Student Activities, Jana Valentine, and two faculty members that Genevieve [Jones, SGA senator] and I select,” said Patrick Smith, chairmen of the SGA Committee.
Jones and Patrick have yet to select the faculty members for the committee.
The Non-Traditional Student Scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled at least part time — six credits — and who will be enrolled at least part time next semester. Candidates must demonstrate a positive impact on campus, have a good standing with the university and hold a 2.75 QPA or higher.
“I think it’s a good way to attract more non-traditional students. I feel like a minority here, being the age that I am,” said UPG student Kathy Evangelista.
The students will be asked to fill out an application, write an essay describing why they should win the scholarship, an unofficial transcript, a student involvement transcript, and one letter of recommendation from a professor at Pitt-Greensburg.
The Truex Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded to a student who is enrolled at Pitt-Greensburg full time this semester and who will be enrolled full time next semester. The student must be an active member in at least one campus organization and be in good standings with the campus while holding a 2.75 QPA or higher.
The John Ridilla Leadership Scholarship is for a student who has contributed to improving campus life. Candidates must be full-time students with at least 2.75 QPA. Students don’t have to be president of a club or hold office to apply, though they cannot use organizations in which they volunteer and get compensated for it.
All scholarships are offered twice a year and applications are available outside of SGA offices 212 Chambers Hall. Applications are due back to the SGA office, 212 Chambers Hall by noon March 6. Scholarship money is applied to the winners account for the following academic term.
