UPG Sports Roundup

The women’s basketball team opened the AMCC playoff tournament with a 66-40 homecourt victory over Penn State Altoona. Led by Nicole Reiser’s 15-point, seven-rebound, five-assist effort, the team overcame an uncharacteristically sloppy game. Usually a team that takes extreme care of the ball, the Bobcats turned it over 24 times.

Also reaching double figures for the Bobcats were Kelsey Wilcox and Amanda Sheaffer, with 14 and 13 points respectively.

The team travels to tournament host Medaille College on Friday night for a semifinal matchup against No. 2 Lake Erie at 8 p.m.

Men’s basketball

The men’s basketball team’s latest faceoff against Penn State Altoona ended much like their previous one — in an overtime loss. The Bobcats suffered a 79-73 defeat, ending their playoff run.

Darnell Hampton led the team by coming off the bench to score 21 points. Also reaching double figures were Josh Kucenic and Jacquet Wells with 16 points a piece.

Baseball

The UPG baseball team is ranked sixth in the recently released AMCC preseason coaches’ poll.

UPG’s junior shortstop Matt Stanziano - the 2007 AMCC Player of the Year and a Third Team All-American - was named the 2008 Preseason Player of the Year.
