Make Pittsburgh your spring break destination
By Rachel Lipko / Staff writer
Stuck in PA over spring break and feeling down and out? Believe it or not there is a ton of stuff to do in downtown Pittsburgh over the upcoming week. So make the most of it and make Pittsburgh your spring beak destination.
Feel like putting all that French that Professor Viano stuffed into your head to good use? Then Pittsburgh’s best kept secret is definitely a must have for you and your taste buds. Le Pommier Bistro Francais was voted one of the top 25 best restaurants in the ‘Burg and the best French restaurant in Pittsburgh by Pittsburgh magazine.
Their $35 buck prix fixe menu Monday through Thursday is still on that borderline price range that most students can take advantage and splurge on, and believe me it’s well worth it! On 2104 East Carson St. it’s in the middle of all of the South Side action, leaving you open for a fun filled night after dinner.
B.B. King is coming to Heinz Hall. Can you think of any other time you’ve had a chance recently to see a musical legend like this? Enough said!
Mixed Up Wednesday’s with Ian, Adam and Sasquatch at Lava Lounge, 2204 in the South Side, includes a wide variety of music. For anyone who’s never been there it’s an experience; the bar is designed to look like the inside of a volcano and the ambiance is really rad. The vibe, which is usually really chill, feeds off the triple djs’ energy and tunes and all three do a great job of getting everyone up off their feet and dancing. While it’s on a Wednesday the place is usually the spot to be and brings in the crowds.
Lawrenceville is slowly becoming safer and starting to build up with trendy stores and posh restaurants strategically placed on the main drag of Butler St., but some underground and off the beaten path times can still had at Belvedere’s.
Every Thursday night DJ Hates You plays the best mix of 80’s music you can find in any club in Pittsburgh. The bar has a little something for everyone, with its two pool tables, huge lounge section for just hanging out, ping pong table, and of course a huge dance floor. Drink specials are decent if you’re a beer fan, but normal priced drinks are pretty reasonable as well. Cover is between $2 and $4 bucks depending on what times you make it there, and if you get there after 11 p.m., good luck finding room to move! Location: 4016 Butler St. Lawrenceville.
Buck Head Saloon, 225 Station Square, is hosting a casino party starting at 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Events included Blackjack tables, poker, roulette, and slot machines. The person with the most chips at 10 p.m. gets a $500 cash prize.
Leave it to Bar Louie in Station Square to give college students a reason to drink at 8 a.m. The bar, located 240 Station Square Drive, is hosting its annual “Kegs and Eggs” party from 8 a.m to 10 a.m. Admission is $25 bucks but includes the breakfast buffet, a Guinness draft, house drinks and a tee shirt.
If that didn’t get you into the sprit for St. Patty’s day then from 1p.m. to 9 p.m., the South Side is promoting “The South Side Leprechaun Lap” bar tour. For $5 plus 2 cans of food, benefiting a local shelter, you are eligible to get into all nine bars participating. Visit Lindypromo.com for more info.
For a non-drinking alternative Swing City, located on 5604 Solway St. in Squirrel Hill, opens at 8 p.m. with a swing dance lesson for beginners for the first hour. Lessons are taught by Bobby D, an extremely lengthy older man in zoot suit/McHammer pants. But don’t let his exterior fool you; this man has some sick moves! Cover is normally $8, but if a bands playing it’s $10 and extremely packed. Dancing goes until midnight and can get super, super packed with over a few hundred people. If it’s your first time ever dancing and you want to go but feel discouraged don’t. Everyone there is very accommodating and sweet.
Feel like relaxing and getting a little culture all at the same time? Pittsburgh’s Mattress Factory, located on 500 Sampsonia Way, is one of the best unknown art galleries in the area. Open Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. students get in for just $5. Right now the “GESTURES: ILLUSTRATIONS OF CATASTROPHE AND REMOTE TIMES” is being featured.
If that doesn’t seem to suit your interest then how does going to over 20 countries without leaving Pittsburgh sound? The Cathedral of Learning’s nationality rooms are one of the most interesting things that I’ve checked out this year. With rooms ranging from Swedish to Romanian, they’re not only breathtakingly beautiful, decked out in the home countries traditional furniture and decorations, they’re educational. Rooms are open Sundays from 11 a.m to 2:30 p.m. and only cost $3.
Oakland is known for of course our home campus and a few college bars here and there. But ask any resident of Oakland where to go and young and old alike will answer the same thing, Fuel and Fuddle or Max Mex. Both Oakland favorites have great drink specials before 11 p.m. on most if not all days of the week. But, after 11 p.m. both restaurants have a good 80 percent of their menus half off. At Fuel and Fuddle diners are treated to oven baked foods ranging from interesting pizzas to Asian inspired edibles. Lots of vegetarian options for those who love the plants and pages upon pages of beer for the beer connoisseurs.
Mad Mex of course offers up a great tex-mex menu of a large variety of foods with many different kinds of sauces to try on anything from boneless wings to inside your wraps. Average bills come out to about $6 for a dinner and a drink and you usually end up taking half of your dinner home.
