A club with a cause
Frisbee Club: Throwing for a good cause, the club will raise money for a person with leukemia.By Joy Pinkney / Staff writer
The Frisbee club’s not just tossing for fun this year. Now they’re doing it for sun and for a good cause. There’s more to these students then just catching a disc.
This year the members of the club have decided to sell 50/50 tickets. The fundraiser is for a family friend of the club’s advisor, Dr. Matthew Luderer, who was diagnosed with leukemia. Luderer had approached the members about the fundraiser idea to help a friend and they quickly approved.
“We wanted to help!” John White, an original member of the club, said.
The proceeds will be handed over as support for the family.
Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood. According to Leukemia-Lymphoma.org, there are over 200,000 people with this disease in the United States. The members would like for everyone to support this great cause.
The group’s first meeting was held last week followed by a friendly scrimmage. Nearly 30 students turned out for the fun. The turnout equaled the amount of members from last year. The club expects it to increase as students become more aware of the club.
White and Spangler are the original founders of the club. During White’s freshman year, he and his friends would toss around a Frisbee for fun. During his sophomore year, they made it official after getting Luderer on board as advisor.
“He saw us playing Frisbee all the time, so he agreed to it. He even joined in a couple times,” White said.
So far the club has used its funding for T-shirts and tournaments. Its members expect to hold more fundraisers in the future.
The Frisbee Club encourages any passerby to join in. For more information please contact John White or Jayson Spangler or Dr. Luderer.
