Basketball season in full swing

Here’s the latest news on your winter sports teams.

The girl’s basketball team has started the season the way most anticipated, after two games they remain un-defeated. On Nov. 15, they traveled to John Carroll University in a game that went down to the wire. Free throws were a big factor as John Carroll struggled from the charity stripe only shooting 51.6 percent, while the lady bobcats only shot 69.8 percent it was enough for them to come away with the 84-77 victory.

In their second game of the season on Nov. 18, they played Geneva and it took every second of the 40 minute game to declare a winner. In a game that had nine lead changes, the bobcat’s struggles at the foul line almost cost them the game. With an eight point lead and just under five minutes remaining, the lady bobcats went just 3-12 from the foul line set up a game-tying three pointer from Geneva with 20 seconds remaining in the game. Sophomore Allison Bilak attempted a game-winning three pointer that was off the mark, however Amanda Sheaffer grabbed the offensive rebound and got the put-back in as time expired to give the bobcats a 60-58 win.

Sheaffer finished the game with 12 points and six rebounds, while Kelsey Wilcox scored a game-high 14 points while adding 5 boards and lone senior Nicole Reiser added 12 points. Wilcox was also named “AMCC player of the week” award for the week of Nov. 17, as she scored a career-high 28 points to go along with 15 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 assists as she lead the bobcats to victory against John Carroll.

The girls are back in action Friday night when they take on Mary-Baldwin in the first round of the Chatham Tournament, with tip-time set for 8 p.m.

The Boys basketball team started their season on the wrong foot as they were killed by Mount Union in the season opener. Shots were not falling for the bobcats, and poor defense led to 55 percent shooting from the field by Mount Union as they connected on nine out of 15 three pointers. The game was never in doubt as the Raiders led by a score of 21-45 at the end of the first half, and ending up winning by a final score of 61-92.

The bobcats who have two sophomores and one freshmen in their starting lineup, are a very young team and perhaps had some first game of the season jitters. Junior Elliot Prigrom led the team with 20 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore guards Larry Bigante and Josh Kucenic also had solid games, as Bigante scored 11 points and seven rebounds and Kucenic added ten points.
