By Maggie Samole / Sports editor

The UPG women’s basketball team’s seven-game winning streak ended Saturday against the Medaille Mavericks. The Lady Bobcats fell 69-55 in the title game of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament last Saturday.

Despite the loss, however, the team earned a high seed in the ECAC South tournament.

Led by Nicole Reiser’s 17-point effort, the teams played a back-and-forth first half that ended with a one-point lead for the Mavericks, 30-29. However, Medaille pulled away in the second frame to earn the 14-point victory.

Heading into Saturday’s match-up against 13th ranked Medaille College, the Pitt-Greensburg women’s basketball team had all the motivation they needed to pull off an upset.

The combination of revenge, a rare home loss and a chance to make the Mavericks eat their words proved enough to spark a 77-72 win over their conference-leading rivals.

Lady Bobcats to host #13 Medaille

Pitt-Greensburg’s women’s basketball team is hoping the number 13 will be unlucky for Medaille College this weekend.

That’s how high the Mavericks have climbed in this week’s NCAA Division III national poll. They travel to Greensburg for an important conference matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m.

With just under six minutes remaining in the first half against the Lake Erie Storm last Saturday, senior guard Tiffany Menhorn secured her spot in Bobcat basketball history. Her layup broke the career scoring record of 1,420 points held by former standout Annie Sral. The moment was an all-time high in Menhorn’s memory bank.

The moment also was short-lived.

At the 15:35 mark of the second half, a Storm player drove to the basket and collided with Menhorn’s left knee. She left the game for a few minutes to collect her wits, but the damage was already done.

The Bobcats and Eagles were deadlocked at 36 points apiece at halftime. The lead seesawed back and forth between the teams during the second half until sophomore forward Kelsey Wilcox tied the game at 64 with a put-back with 74 seconds to go. Women's basketball has talent, desire

Julie Ehrman: file photoJulie Ehrman: file photoExpectations are high this season for Pitt-Greensburg’s women’s basketball team. With four returning starters, including three all-conference players, the Lady Bobcats are poised for a deep playoff run.

Last year’s team was inexperienced which contributed to a first round exit in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs. The same can’t be said this year.

Junior guard Tiffany Menhorn spent the final 2:37 of the UPG women’s basketball team’s first-round playoff loss on the bench. Not because she can’t play but because she fouled out. Menhorn, who said she loves basketball because of the competitiveness, must have been in agony having to watch the from bench.

UPG women’s basketball does not have one senior on the team. In fact, there are only three juniors — guards Tiffany Menhorn, Nicole Resier and Nicole Beggs — on the 14 women roster. So, it’s no surprise that freshmen have had to contribute. But no one could have expected guard Julie Ehrman to contribute the way she has.

Ehrman, who averages more than 30 minutes a game, is fourth on the team in points per game (9.9) and has helped the Lady Bobcats to a 10-6 conference record (12-11 overall) and a potential playoff berth.
