Clinton focuses speech on savings and Social Security
On campus: Hillary Clinton discusses Social Security with the crowd. During her speech, she vowed that, if elected, she would not privatize Social Security.
By Dylan Nice / Editor in chief
Hillary Clinton focused yesterday’s “Solutions for the American Economy” town hall event in Chambers Hall on Social Security and retirement savings options. The crowd there was more middle-aged than 20-something, but Clinton said she has ideas to benefit youth.
More specifically, they’ll save money and someday retire.
In front of a packed crowd of at least 1,300, Clinton discussed encouraging middle-class families to save under her American Retirement Accounts Plan, which offers 3.4 million Pennsylvania families up to $1,000 in matching tax to save. She said she also plans to protect Social Security against privatization.
“When I’m president, privatizing Social Security will be completely out of the question,” Clinton said. She said she was shocked to learn that Sen. John McCain supports a privatization plan similar to President Bush’s.

Clinton causes chaos for some
By Dave Streett / Staff writer
Double line? Nope, that’s not two lines waiting to see Sen. Hillary Clinton speak at Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday. The crowd to see Clinton was so large that the line outside of Chambers hall extended to Millstein Library then curled around to the back of McKenna Hall.
No parking, heightened security and constant screams of “one for $3 or two for 5” were just some of the distractions created by Hillary Clinton’s visit to Pitt-Greensburg. Students not attending were the main people effected.
After noon, anybody who dreamed of parking on campus was out of luck. Cars with Clinton signs were scattered throughout the grass. UPG police told some people to drive around until they found an area “not blocking somebody else in.” Students were often left looking for spots.
“This is bullshit,” said junior Mark Gigliotti. “If I wouldn’t have found a spot, I would parked on the grass right in front of the computer lab.”
Gigliotti, like other students, needed to be on campus for class. The campus administration elected to leave it up to each teacher to have or cancel class.
